Long Covid is a real issue that's increasingly sensationalized and turned almost into a type of moral panic. I wrote a post on why that's a terrible development: especially for Long Covid sufferers who deserve respect, proper studies and reporting.https://zeynep.substack.com/p/long-covid-how-bungle-reporting-on …
You’re right, comparison group so important to really characterize this syndrome. Symptoms are so common in healthy general population, as this representative population survey shows https://twitter.com/AaronRichterman/status/1369618014258278400 …
Yeah, exactly. I found the study weak so why this coverage? I think it has simultaneously done a disservice to Long Covid and to anxiety—both real issues. Plus, from my—admittedly limited observations—it has created another round of panic among some people towards the vaccines.
Fascinating article how it is good science to select a study with "electronic health records: i.e. people who were interacting with the hospital system. So the study necessarily excludes anyone who didn’t feel the need to interact with the hospital" ?# CoVidCrazy
Thank you for writing this, I found it so perplexing that the study got coverage in the Times when it seemed frankly alarmist and weak even in study form
You're very welcome. If anything, I find this kind of coverage to be a disservice to the problem itself—clearly, there are people for whom there are long-term, even debilitating effects but turning it into this vague, broad and non-specific threat doesn't help them.
Yes, lack of comparison group or baseline has been a real problem throughout the pandemic. Look at the NYT author’s other pieces and they are consistently fear-mongering about very-low probability events.
These retrospective studies pulled from hospital records can always be misleading. Incomplete records, lack of study design. Etc. I'm hoping we will get a better understanding when we do actual research with patient enrollment, scientists who can design and execute a study.
Any sort of virus is going to lead some people to have odd complications. But many long Covid sufferers appear to be suffering from mental issues.
